Pauline Stuart on Sextortion: What Every Parent Needs to Know

Pauline Stuart is a former special education teacher and a mother of two. She shares the heartbreaking story of her 17-year-old son, Ryan Stuart, whose life was tragically cut short by an online predator. She hopes that sharing her story will save other families from going through the same pain.

Pauline speaks fondly of her son, Ryan. He was a straight-A student, working on his Eagle Scout project, and had a second-degree black belt. He was also the secretary of his local FFA chapter and a natural leader. He was excited about starting college at Washington State University(WSU). He had a future full of promise.

But everything changed just one night, shortly after Ryan’s birthday and his tour of the WSU campus. That evening, everything seemed normal. Ryan was his usual bubbly self and showed no signs of distress. Pauline recalls that the family went to bed unaware of what was about to unfold.

While alone in the middle of the night, someone posing as a girl started chatting with Ryan on Google Hangouts, a platform he had used for school during the pandemic. At first, the conversation seemed harmless. But soon, the predator sent him an inappropriate photo and asked for one in return. When Ryan sent a photo back, the blackmail started.

The predators immediately demanded $5,000 and threatened to send Ryan’s picture to his family and friends if he didn’t pay. But Ryan couldn’t send money. Pauline explained that they had parental controls in place that stopped him from using certain apps. So the scammers switched tactics.

They got him to hand over his Instagram login details instead if he couldn’t afford the money they were requesting. Ryan did this believing that the blackmail would end. But it only got worse. They extracted his contact list, and made a collage with his photos, showing him just how easy it would be to expose him.

Ryan, now desperate and scared, managed to send $150 from his college fund. But the demands didn’t stop. The threats just kept coming. The predators even attempted to manipulate him through false sympathy, claiming they were only doing this to “help a sister”. Ryan must have felt so helpless that he thought the only way out of this difficult situation was to end his own life. The tactic used on Ryan is called financial sextortion.

The Lesson for Parents on Sextortion

Ryan’s story is a reminder of how dangerous sextortion can be and how fast it happens. In just eight hours, while his family slept, his life was turned upside down. There was no long grooming process, and no time for intervention. Just one moment of trust, and then a relentless attack that ended in tragedy.

In her talks across the country, Pauline often hears the same response from parents: "This could never happen to my kid." She once thought the same thing. The Stuarts were a close family with good safeguards in place, yet they still lost Ryan to sextortion. Their tragedy shows that no family is immune to this danger.

The hardest lesson in all of this is that fear and shame can silence even the closest families. Ryan had a strong relationship with his parents, but at that moment, he was too scared to ask for help. That’s why it’s so important to have these conversations before something happens. Kids need to know they can come to us, no matter what, no matter how bad it seems.

What You Can Do

So what can parents do? Talk to your kids now. Make sure they know what sextortion is and what to do if someone tries to manipulate them. Build a network of trusted adults they can turn to. Keep crisis hotline numbers handy. And above all, reassure them that no mistake is worth their life. There is always a way out.

Have you, like Pauline, already lost a child or a person close to you to sextortion? That is something no parent should ever have to experience. But Pauline refused to let Ryan’s story fade into silence. She became an advocate. She turned her pain into a mission to educate other parents before it’s too late. Pauline’s efforts have already saved lives. Some kids who’ve heard Ryan’s story and found themselves in similar situations knew they could ask for help, which prevented another tragedy.

You can make a difference, too. Share this message. Educate other parents. Together, we can save more families from experiencing this heartbreak.

How the Mission Haven Helps Families

For Ryan’s family, life will never be the same. His younger brother, now in college, won’t even use social media. He’s terrified of what happened to Ryan happening to him. That’s how deep this tragedy cuts. And that’s why we have to do everything we can to protect our kids before it’s too late.

At The Mission Haven, we are dedicated to providing a safe haven for victims and survivors of child sexual exploitation and sex trafficking.
